.FAQS

Why should I attend this course?

Many students have told us there are few opportunities available in school to receive hands-on construction training. Others have requested more classes that deal with landscape architecture, or more applied projects which explore environmental issues.

Space Saloon: FIELDWORKS is an opportunity to experience these topics outside of the classroom walls, in a communal and collaborative environment. We will think with our hands, experiment with experts from different disciplines, and of course, have fun in the process.

Furthermore, Space Saloon is more than just design. Our week long camp builds strong social networks through its open environment, collaborative atmosphere, and social events (concerts, lectures, parties) which leave a long-lasting legacy after the week is over.

What do I get for participating?

Participants will work closely with a wide array of international architects, designers, artists, and engineers on experimental projects that push the limits of design, improving their professional development skills and team working abilities. All students that complete the course will be provided with a certificate of completion, useful for future applications and resumes.

Students will have an active role in the design process, providing an extraordinary opportunity to grow your portfolio with built work. Projects will also be published in international media outlets, crediting all participants.

How much does it cost and how do I pay?

Until March 29, the cost of participation is $1350, which includes 8 days of on-site accommodation, food (3 meals per day), tools and materials, and workshop fees.

After March 29, the fee increases to $1500.

Space Saloon is an officially registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Our workshops are realized with the support of our sponsors, partners, volunteers, and grants, but we could not do it without your help.

Do I need any prior experience in the tools or subjects being investigated?

Nope. All of our tutorials are designed for a range of experience levels, even beginners.

This workshop provides the opportunity to work with a group of internationally acclaimed professionals, builders, and educators who will be training students in a wide array of tools, techniques, and methods.

Do I have to be a University student to attend? Do I have to be an architecture student?
No, FIELDWORKS is open to all participants above the age of 18. We encourage students from a variety of disciplines to attend, not just architecture.

How do I get to the site?

The site is a two hour drive from Los Angeles, off of Highway 62 en route to Joshua Tree. We can arrange transportation to and from Los Angeles, if needed, however we encourage participants to organize their own transportation in order to take advantage of all the other sites of interest in the area, before and after the workshop.

What is the accommodation and food like?

Participants will be hosted in a series of dormitory style houses on the campus, with full access to bathroom facilities, WiFi, and safety lockers. Camping grounds are also available and encouraged - the experience is not to be missed in this unique outdoor environment.

Three full meals will be prepared daily by our award winning chef, who is able to accomodate for all food allergies or veg/vegan preferences.
